REPORT CARDS AND GRADES
Report Cards
Halfway through each quarter, students receive either a progress report or an interim report. Interims must be signed and returned to the teacher. Report cards are issued every nine weeks on a schedule determined at the beginning of each school year. Please review and sign each report card and schedule a meeting if you would like to discuss it with your child's teacher. Below is the grading procedure at Green:
End of Grade Tests (EOG's)

Students in third through eighth grade must take the EOGs in reading and math at the end of each school year. Additionally, fourth grade students must take the state writing test in February. You will receive a report of your child's performance in these tests at the end of each school year with a score corresponding to a level 1, 2, 3 or 4.

If your child does not obtain a 3 or higher, he or she will have two more opportunities to pass the test. It is very important that you and your child take this test seriously because if he or she does not pass, the principal will decide whether or not your child will be retained.
 
Homework

Purposes:

  • Reinforce curriculum
  • Independent practice
  • Review skills
  • Involve parents when appropriate
  • Teach responsibility, independence and self-direction

Assignment:

  • Will be meaningful
  • Should reflect purposes of Green Year Round policy

Time involved for homework each day:

  • K - Parent involvement encouraged (review and occasional family activities)
  • 1st - About 20 minutes of homework and 15 minutes of reading
  • 2nd - About 30 minutes of homework and fifteen minutes of reading
  • 3rd - About 30-40 minutes of homework and 15-20 minutes of reading
  • 4th - About 45 minutes of homework
  • 5th - About one hour of homework and some long-range projects
 
Academic Programs
We have several academic programs in place to help our students be successful. We have two reading specialists for kindergarten, first and second grade students as well as a separate reading specialist for third through fifth grade students. The Fast ForWord program is a software-based system that helps students with listening, reading and language skills. Third through fifth grade students who need help passing the End of Grade Tests (EOGs) can go to the Accelerated Learner Program (ALP). Students who qualify may take part in the Academically Gifted (AG) program. All these programs are free. Additionally, the Discovery Program, run by the PTA, is a three-day science program that costs between $65 and $75.
 
Retention
A student can be retained he or she does make good enough grades or does not pass the End of Grade tests (EOGs). A letter will be sent home to let you know ahead of time if there is a chance that a student may be retained. Parents should be aware of how their child is doing in school and if he or she is doing his or her homework. In case your child is not doing well, you may schedule a Parent-Teacher conference and speak with the teacher to learn how you can help your child be successful in school.
