What is Safety Patol?
Safety Patrol is a team of students who work together with teachers and staff to help create a safe environment on the school grounds.

How do you become a Safety Patrol team member?
Students are nominated by teachers to become part of the Safety Patrol team.  Teachers nominate students based on their dependability, good behavior, consistency in academics, leadership skills and their exhibition of the GYR character traits.

What are the Safety Patrol duties?
Safety Patrol students help maintain hall discipline and orderliness outside of the school.  They keep students safe by reminding them not to run, helping them if they have fallen or dropped something, escorting students to vehicles and opening/closing doors, and assisting teachers and staff at various places around the school during arrival and departure time.

Expectations of a Safety Patrol team member:

  1. Know when and where you have duty
  2. The duty schedule is posted in the Library, in your classroom, and on the TV
  3. Remember to sign in and wear your vest
  4. Stay at your assigned post and do not sit down while on duty
  5. If you must miss your duty, please find a replacement

Safety Patrol Scheduling
Where students have duty and how often depends on several different factors.  Transportation is one such factor.  Students who go to the YMCA or go home by carpool have more flexibility than students who ride a bus home.  A bus rider cannot have carpool or bus duty because they would not know when their bus arrives and they would have to leave once their bus arrives.  To avoid these problems, bus riders will always be assigned a hall duty where they can glance inside a classroom to see the bus screen and leave when their bus arrives.

Another factor that affects scheduling has to do with who is tracked in and who is tracked out.  Students belonging to tracks with a small number of members will have duty more often than those in tracks with a large number of members.  This is also why some tracks will have duty the first week they track back in – there simply are not enough students to cover all posts!  However, students tracking back in will always have an afternoon duty so they will have the entire day to find out if they have Safety Patrol responsibilities.

The schedule for Safety Patrol must also work with the Lily Pad Live schedule.  Students participating in LPL cannot have a morning Safety Patrol duty the same week.

Safety Patrol Accountability
Safety Patrol students are expected to sign in before they go to their assigned post.  There is a clipboard in the Library with a list of each student’s name and each day of the week where they must initial that they were on duty.  This is checked each week and warnings are sent to students who fail to show up for duty. On the warning slip is a place to respond if a student was sick, absent, etc. to excuse him or her from missing duty.  If a student accumulates three unexcused absences from duty, his or her name will be removed from the Safety Patrol team member list.
