Green
Year Round's
Speech
& Language Program
Referrals
Kindergartner's
speech, language, and hearing skills are screened at the beginning
of the year. Children who do not meet the screening requirements
are followed by the speech therapist and classroom teacher. If
these students demonstrate difficulty in the regular classroom, a referral
for additional testing may be made by the student support team. For
children in grades 1-5, teachers and parents can refer students at
any time when concerns arise.
Eligibility
North
Carolina proposes guidelines that student's should meet before being
placed in special education for speech and language impairments. After
a speech/language evaluation is completed, the IEP team meets to decide
if special education is necessary and if the student meets the eligibility
requirements developed by the state.
Placement
If
the IEP team decides that placement in special
education is appropriate, the student can be seen directly by the speech
therapist in pull-out
therapy or within the classroom. Consultation is also an option. This
is indirect special education where the speech
therapist and teacher work together to provide the student with what
he/she needs.
Homework
Each
student in the speech/language program
has his/her own "speech folder". Homework
will be placed in the folder. Please return homework in this
folder on the next scheduled speech class. Feel free to send
notes or questions via the folder.
